Science Lab- Thermometers

We made thermometers and used them outdoors to look at the different temperatures in different areas outside.

Hi!
Here goes with what we are learning in the classroom and important things to know:

Language Arts- We are working on Read to Self and Word Work. We worked on this last week. I will be introducing Read to Someone and Work on Writing this week for Daily 5 activities during our Language Arts block. Our spelling words this week: skip, spot, sniff, smell, stop, swim, that, there, water and when. We are working on making sure our sentences have uppercase letters at the beginning and ending punctuation marks.

Math- We are working on counting to 120. We are working on finding the missing numbers in different series of numbers on charts and activity sheets. We will be starting intervention groups this Wednesday. We will be switching first grade classrooms every Wednesday depending on the skills they are currently working on.

Science- We will be having our first STEM day this coming Wednesday on our Early Release Day. We will be building a structure and determine if it can withstand different wind speeds.

Social Studies- We will continue to work on Me on the Map booklet this week. Please continue to help your child practice his/her address as  I will be testing later this quarter.

Thursday, August 29th: 3rd-5th Grandparent breakfast. Chick-fil-A night
Friday, August 30th:  K-2 Grandparent breakfast
Friday, August 30th: Grandparent Reading Day.
Monday, September 2nd: Labor Day NO SCHOOL
Thursday, September 5th: End of the first 41/2 weeks. Progress reports sent home. This quarter every student will receive a progress report.

Week of August 19-23

Hi!
We are off to a great start to the school year. I have enjoyed getting to know your children. They are working hard to get into the routine and on their activities. This week we are working on the following:

Language Arts- We are working on R family blends this week. During writing, we are working on making sure our sentences have uppercase letters at the beginning and using punctuation marks at the end of our sentences. We are working on trying to write as much as we can.

Math- We are working on numbers to 120. We are counting from different numbers to 120 and filling in missing numbers on a chart. We are working on calendar skills.

Science- We continue to work on weather. We will be finishing up types of precipitation. The students will be going to Science Lab this week. We will also finish up seasons this week. The students will be getting into small groups to create a mural about their season.

Phonics words/Spelling for this week: crab, trip, brim, drip, prop, trim, get, make, oil, out.
  • Your child needs a healthy snack everyday.
  • Please have your child bring back his/her agenda and red take home folder every day.
  • I will collect Homework notebooks on Fridays and return them on Mondays.
  • Please email me at: kristin.shildneck@cobbk12.org if you have any questions or concerns.
  • If you would like your child to have treats only on Fridays in the cafeteria please write a note or add it online. I can pass the note along.
  • Please put all money into envelopes and label with my name and what it is for etc.
  • Words for Phonics/Spelling Test will be put into your child's agenda on Mondays.

Classroom News- Augst 12-16

What are We Learning This Week?

Science: We will continue our unit on Weather.  This week we will talk about the seasons and the types of precipitation. 

Phonics: This week we will start our phonics units.  This week's unit focuses on the l blends. We will have our spelling test on Friday of every week. We will work on these words during word work and during phonics. Also, please work on each night for homework.

Math: We are continuing our unit on Graphing.  The children are learning how to conduct a survey, take data, create a tally chart and then create either a picture graph or bar graph using the information they gathered. 

Language Arts: We are working on Reading to Self and learning about Daily 5 and the expectations during this time. The children have been working hard on staying focused, staying in one spot, and ways to read a book.  The students will also write their first narrative.  This will be a baseline for us to determine your child's writing ability.  We will be writing about something we did over the summer break. 

Learning Commons:  We will be visiting the Learning Commons on Friday for our 2nd orientation lesson.  Please have your child bring in their book so they can check out a new one. 

Homework starts this week.  The children will bring home their homework on Monday's and they will need to return it on Friday.  This is part of the responsibility quality we are trying to teach them in our class.

Friday, August 23rd: FBI Breakfast.  Dads come have breakfast with your child and stay for the meeting.

We had fun making a tent for the bear. We learned how to work in small groups cooperatively and share materials. They did a great job!

First Day of School and Things to Know-2019/2020

We had a great day today! We had fun getting to know each other and working together in small groups on a puzzle challenge. The children are working hard learning the classroom routines and reviewing the rules of school. They worked well together, used kind words and exhibited good behaviors throughout the day. Here are some things to know for the classroom:

  • your child will need a healthy snack everyday.
  • Specials schedule: M- PE, T- Music, W- PE, Th- PE and Friday- Art
  • Please sign your child's agenda each day and have your child return it along with the red take home folder. Please take out all papers everyday.
  • Please return all paperwork as soon as possible.
  • your child may bring a water bottle everyday and is recommended to stay hydrated throughout the day.
  • Please write any transportation changes in the agenda notebook or write a note and place in the red take home folder. 
  • please be sure to add money to your child's lunch account if he/she will be buying lunch.
