Finishing Up August

Wow! I cannot believe we are already finishing up the month of August. The children are working so hard to get into the routine of everything and learning first grade. Here goes with what we are learning and doing in the classroom:

  • Language Arts- We will be working on editing/correcting sentences and narrative writing. We will be working on learning the groups of Daily 5 such as Word Work, Read to Someone, Read to Self, and groups to work on reading skills and assessments.
  • Math- We are working on place value. We are discussing the tens and ones groups. We are working on grouping ones into groups of tens, the ones being left and what the number looks like etc. We are working on Guessing Numbers and using dot cards to determine what the number is etc.
  • Social Studies/Science- We are discussing our global address. (address, city, county, state, country and continent.) Please practice this with your child as often as possible so they work on learning this information. We are discussing weather.
Helpful Information/Reminders for the Classroom:
  • Your child needs a healthy snack each day.
  • Your child needs to bring his/her Agenda and Red Take Home folder each day.
  • Please have your child bring his/her purple Homework folder on Monday and return on Friday with his/her homework. I will send home the new homework for the week on Mondays.
  • Please place all money in labeled envelopes.
  • Please put all transportation notes regarding changes in the agenda or note in the take home folder.
  • This Friday is Grandparents' Breakfast is Friday, August 31st.
  • Progress Reports go home on Thursday, September 6th.
  • Our Leader in Me Habit of the Month is: Be Proactive. Please discuss this with your child and how he/she does this at home, so they may share during our class meeting.
  • Extra homework ideas: practice any high frequency words (packet sent home earlier in the school year) that your child may not know. Your child may write about experiences focusing on capitalization, spacing between words, ending punctuation etc. Please have your child write as much as possible with a detailed picture to match the writing/story.
Thanks as always for your time and support with your child.

Hi!
The children are working hard on learning the routine and procedures of Daily 5. They are working hard to build stamina during Read to Self and Read to Someone. We have worked up to 17 minutes for Read to Self. The children are doing great reading quietly and have learned 3 ways to read a book and what EEKK means. (Ask your child if he/she knows what this means?) We did a great job this past week with turning in our homework. (Please be sure to turn it in each Friday) Your child will receive the new homework on the Monday of each week. We will be working on our global address this week. Please help your child to put his/her address in his/her agenda so we can access it during our Social Studies activities this week. We worked hard last week on the l blends during Phonics time. We will be working on the R blends this week during this time. The children did a great job this week with their first spelling test. We are learning how to take a test. We will be going into Place Value with ones and tens this week. We are working on ways to show numbers during Number Talks. We have been discussing the 7 Habits and what it means to be a leader. We are working hard to be respectful to one another and in the hallways to show respect towards students learning in their classrooms.

Helpful Reminders for the Classroom:

  • Please be sure to initial/sign your child's agenda each night. Please use the agenda for communication purposes with me when needed. (transportation change, etc.)
  • Please be sure to pack your child a healthy snack each day along with his/her agenda and take home folder.
  • Please place all money in an labeled envelope with your child's name and what the money is for etc. on the envelope.
  • Please note that your child may bring a water bottle each day. They need water after recess and can get hot due to the temperatures right now if he/she would like to bring one.
  • We are always in need of healthy snacks for the classroom when someone may not bring a snack as we all forget from time to time.
  • Please help your child to practice his/her address as well as his/her student ID number as they use it for many different activities and times throughout the day. It can really help things to move on quickly when he/she can login with their student ID numbers.

We had a great first week. We worked hard on learning the routine and had fun meeting new friends. The children worked hard on all their activities. I have been very pleased with their behavior and work ethic. They are working hard during all activities. We met with Mrs. Hallmark and Mr. Cohen to review and go over school policies and procedures. We will be working on counting past 100 and graphing skills. We will be discussing types of weather. We will be visiting the Science Lab this week. I know the children will be excited to start this class. I am excited to meet with all of you during our Open House this week, Thursday August 9th at 5:00.
